Assistive Technology Assessments are available for students with physical, orthopedic, or
communication or learning disabilities who attend their local district schools. Individual
assessments or a combination of assessments are provided based on the individual student's needs.

Alternative Augmentative Communication Evaluations are provided by speech therapists who,
based on the student's cognitive skill, determine the most appropriate alternative communication
method for the student. During the evaluation, the speech therapist may identify one or more
appropriate devices that might be used by the students for communication. The therapist provides
recommendations for the purchase of equipment and the training of staff.

Technology Access Evaluation are provided by occupational and/or physical therapists working with a
special education teacher. They are designed to assist the student in the use of assistive technology
based upon his/her ability to access that technology.

The special education teacher provides an evaluation of the student's cognitive ability and his/her readiness
for computer use. The physical and/or occupational therapists determine the appropriate access method,
including information on positioning and location for the equipment and the student.

The therapists then identify equipment, such as switches and alternative keyboard that will help the student
access the appropriate technology. They also provide recommendations for the purchase of equipment and
for initial training of staff in the use of equipment.

Additional Services include specialized training that is available for the student and for district staff to facilitate
the use of the assistive equipment used by district students.
