Alumni string musicians of The Academy are available for in-school residencies during the spring 2010 semester. The structure of each residency day is flexible, and can include sectional work, performances by alumni musicians, creative approaches to musical and technical skills, and listening sessions of related music. Residency length is determined in consultation with the school district, but must be a minimum of five days. The residency culminates in a performance by each chamber ensemble at the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center on April 15, 2010, at 8 PM. Applications are open to Nassau County schools with intermediate to advanced string ensembles in grades 9 through 12. Residencies are eligible for aid through Nassau BOCES contract. Music directors should be committed to the idea that bringing a performer’s perspective into the classroom will enhance student learning, must be willing to collaboratively plan the residency, and should be open to non-traditional approaches to teaching musical techniques and concepts The cost for the residency may vary, but is $3,500 based on two Academy alumni (one upper-string player and one lower-string player) per school for a five-day residency. The Academy is a two-year leadership program for postgraduate musicians designed to develop the skills and values necessary for careers that combine musical excellence with education, community engagement, and advocacy. Alumni of The Academy are high-level musicians who are passionate about sharing their artistry with music students. Through The Academy, they have experience creating deep partnerships with music teachers, and working alongside educators to enrich students’ learning. For more information, visit www.acjw.org. The Academy is made possible by a leadership gift from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
