In the MCS Spotlight:
Dr. Roseanne Campo Melucci
Nassau BOCES School Library System
 Administrator of the Year 2004

On March 2, 2005 the Nassau BOCES School Library System awarded the 2004 Administrator of the Year to NASTECH member, Roseanne Campo Melucci Ed D, Director of Curriculum and Technology from the East Rockaway School District. She was nominated by the district’s school librarians, Pat Poppe, Nancy Minkoff and Arleen Buckley, stating that she has demonstrated policies and procedures for the advancement of school libraries and school library programs, exhibited educational leadership, fostered the growth of school librarians, exhibited knowledge and understanding of current library practices, and possessed vision regarding future trends in school librarianship.

With (from left) Librarians Arleen Buckley, Nancy Minkoff, Pat Poppe, Superintendent, Dr. Arnold Dodge of East Rockaway and Eva Efron of NBSLS.

According to Ms. Poppe, "Roseanne has made the Library Media Specialists feel like they are on an equal plane with other faculty members. We have been included in district meetings, asked to offer workshops, and she has generally kept us 'in the loop.'

"Her attendance at our bi-monthly meetings where we share common goals and concerns has benefited us all. Our technology needs are noted, our program ideas are given her support, and she in turn keeps us abreast of curriculum needs and changes. "

Ms. Buckley writes, "Dr. Melucci personally sees to it that our libraries have all that we need to provide the best services to our students.  She facilitates our tech support and arranges library-focused professional development.  Whether it is a scanner or an on-line database or a laptop with projector, she continues to provide us with the tools we need to teach effectively.

"Beyond the technology, Roseanne sees us as fellow teachers, and continually invites the media specialists to join in various district dialogues. Dr. Melucci is a proponent of the research that shows a direct correlation between effective library programs and student achievement. As much as she loves the bells and whistles of our information age, she sees the big picture in that curriculum drives the use of technology."

Ms. Buckley adds, "Roseanne is always looking for ways to enhance technology into our library program. We ask and most of the time she delivers. She is a true supporter of the library program and technology."

The award was presented at the NBSLS March Liaison meeting held at the Nassau BOCES Hawthorn Center, Massapequa Park. Approximately 100 school librarians and administrators attended.
