Wide Area Networking (WAN) ServiceWorking with district architects, engineers and technical staff, and carefully selected vendors, our staff has designed and implemented a number of district Wide Area Networks. The largest and most sophisticated of these WANs continues to be our own BOCES WAN which integrates voice, video and data services throughout our 28 locations. For districts, we
have designed and implemented over 30 WANs, ranging from small WANs with
three locations up to larger implementations comprising ten or more sites.
Connectivity methods range from copper T1s to multi-strand fiber optic
able to emerging wireless technologies.
Our standards are centered around the best in the industry. We use CISCO technology for our infrastructure, Dell servers and PCs for delivery to the desktop, and Novell and Microsoft NT for networking. We selected these vendors long before they became the industry leaders. Our networks are monitored central at the RIC (Regional Information Center). We do not outsource this critical function to a profit-oriented vendor. Because our staff is skilled in all phases of the design, implementations, and maintenance of these types of networks, and we are a not-for-profit organization with a highly developed understanding of the public educational environment, we are uniquely qualified to fill this need for our Nassau County school districts. Networking Service
The Networking Service provides technical and software support for
networks of microcomputers, supporting the development of Local Area
Networks (LANs) that allow educators to manage and Contact:
Technology Planning and Building Network Design ServiceThis service helps districts plan and implement a comprehensive automation program. Many districts are currently working to make their microcomputers more cost-effective by implementing Local Area Networks (LANs). Often these networks require increasingly sophisticated wiring schemes, switches, firewalls, and "routers" that allow users to access information residing on different file servers within the district, outside the district, or via the Internet. The Design Service helps districts assess the needs of a particular school building or of the entire district. Its staff members can then design, plan and implement one or more LANs for administrative offices or entire school buildings. Contact:
Cabling Service The Nassau BOCES cabling service offers design, management and installation of the cable and utility and electronics for school districts that are installing individual Local Area Networks (LANs), distributed LANs, and/or district Wide Area Networks (WANs) as part of their district's technology infrastructure. The service includes consultation, site survey(s), network design, detailed proposal that incorporates a network plan, ordering and delivery of most supplies, cable installation by qualified subcontractors and project management. Internet Service The Internet Service is available to districts with a BOCES-supported Local Area Network (LAN) that is capable of supporting the TCP/IP telecommunications protocol. It provides total connectivity to the Internet from workstations on a LAN in a classroom, lab, library or office. The service includes planning, purchasing, installation and maintenance of telecommunications equipment. Contact:
