What to Expect

Massapequa and Herricks school districts were on hand to present their ongoing global projects. Mexico and Herricks connected through an International Videoconference.

International Videoconference

"21st Century Skills, Education, and Competitiveness" report discusses the need for the students to be globally competitive. To achieve this it will "require a new approach to education that recognizes the critical roles 21st century skills play in the workforce." Students from the USA and Mexico connected through videoconferencing technology to share their views of 21st century learning and how education is preparing them for the future work force.

Participating Schools:

Thomas Jefferson Institute, Mexico via videoconferencing

Herrick School District, USA

iEARN (International Education and Resource Network), the world's largest K-12 non-profit global network that enables young people to use the Internet and other new technologies to engage in collaborative educational projects that both enhance learning and make a difference in the world. We learned about the network and its online collaboration center, and how to find projects that can be used to enhance curriculum and promote 21st century skills. You can have your students learning with the world not just about it in projects that can easily be correlated with curricular objectives.

 A Showcase of District Technology

Infusing a global perspective into our students' education is one of the most challenging-and important-tasks facing school districts today. Members of Herricks School District shared the journey that has taken them from the partnerships and on to recognition as a district that is successfully addressing this challenge. With a goal-but not a plan- the district has looked for opportunities, taken chances, and let the unpredictable create an environment of intellectual experimentation that has motivated and excited everyone.

From a fifth grade mock G-8 summit to a middle school hybrid art/wood language class, they shared examples and information about district wide initiatives that are exciting students and teachers and moving the district forward in making global connections for our students.
