Special Events for Students... Energize your curriculum with these great events!

n At your School
n Events at the Cradle
n Conservation Education Day
n Science Expo
n New! Junior Solar Sprint (MS Solar Car Competition)

At your School....

Our program’s “Science Guy” Bill Monahan, will be available for school assemblies and classroom visits during the coming school year. His presentations have been enjoyed by hundreds of teachers and students that have been involved with our JASON and Immersion programs - we have now opened this up to other schools as well! Numerous topics that relate to themes and content in your curricula are available such as those listed below:

  • Rainforests / Forest ecology

  • Seashore ecology/Marine Biology

  • Pond Life: Invertebrates, Aquatic Life

  • Space and Ocean Exploration

  • It's all about Energy!

  • Extreme environments (arctic, deep sea, critters of the   deep – bioluminescence)

  • Global Warming; Weather and Climate Change

These presentations can include assemblies, classroom sessions and even a "pre-trip" for teachers prior to the program to prepare for the school visits. Download the flyer for more information and pricing.

At the Cradle of Aviation...

The Cradle’s IMAX Theater will be showing exciting films that relate to themes and content in your curricula. After viewing the film, your students will be led through engaging demonstrations and hands-on activities conducted by our naturalists at stations set up throughout the Atrium and Lobby. Choose from:

Bugs: This "journey into the tiny world of bugs on the giant screen" is a live-action nature drama exploring the lives of a praying mantis and a butterfly. This rainforest themed film is shown from an insect's perspective. Shot on location in Borneo jungles, it features close-up action of more than 40 insects. The concepts of complete and incomplete metamorphosis, predator and prey relationships and “the circle of life” will be evident to your students in this engaging film.

Follow the real-life expedition to the islands and waters of the South Pacific to document the health and beauty of coral reefs. But sadly, you’ll also swim through vast stretches of bleached coral bone yards, and learn how our actions may cause these devastating results.  Coral Reef Adventure shows the intense challenges and rewards of ocean exploration. It’s the beginning towards a growing global effort to understand, appreciate and protect our planet’s oceans.

Conservation Education Field Day

This is an annual event for 5th graders. For 2010 it will be held at the Cradle of Aviation on March 8. It will feature a great story about conservation: the IMAX film, Grand Canyon Adventure. For more information - go to our "CEFD" webpage

Middle School Science Expo

This event is designed for 7th & 8th Grade students who enjoy doing Science projects!  The primary goal of this Expo will be to provide a venue to support and celebrate the tremendous amount of young talent we have and to further promote and enhance interest in Science and related fields. For more information, go to our Expo webpage

Junior Solar Sprint

Sponsored by the Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP) and coordinated by NESEA (Northeast Sustainable Energy Association), this event is for middle school students. Teams will design, build and race a solar powered model car! It helps them excel in science and math and become problem solvers. "JSS" is great in classrooms, afterschool programs and youth clubs. See the informational flyer from NESEA

JSS is just getting started on Long Island! We will be having an informational meeting on December 9 at 3 PM for district science and/or technology coordinators. Call today to find out more!
