Meeting the Standards

Every year, tens of thousands of students participate in programs at our BOCES Outdoor Education Centers in Brookville and at Caumsett State Historic Park as well as at local schools and beaches and aboard boats. BOCES Naturalists conduct interdisciplinary, hands-on activities for multiple groups of up to 15 students. Typical programs are four hours in duration. Longer programs for additional hours or even including dinner and an evening program,  or a 2 day /one night residential program, can be arranged

It is our goal to support the curricular needs of our participating teachers. The outdoors can often bring that vocabulary list to life, give real-life experience in the field for sampling and data collection, parallel a story from a literature novel or enhance communication skills across grade levels or for a small group.  We welcome your input in designing a custom-made experience.

The New York State Learning Standards provide the guidelines for what students need to know.  The documents listed below demonstrate how our activity-based programs provide your students with hands-on experience to better understand content:

Meeting the NYS Standards through...
Marine Biology Programs: Beach, Salt marsh and Boat
Field Ecology Programs: Pond, Field and Forest
Field Ecology Programs for MS and HS
Challenge Course Programs
Orienteering and GPS Programs
Survival Programs

                      I see...and I remember
                                       I do...and I understand
