Summer Programs 2008
Our Outdoor Education Centers
at Caumsett State Historic Park and Brookville provide access to
outstanding outdoor habitats and facilities. Buses from central
locations bring participants to one of our centers by 9 a.m. and they
leave the site at 3 p.m. Our programs are guided by experienced Nassau BOCES naturalists
who are specially trained to work with young people of every ability
level. Please call for more information and to see if your district

and students who attended Outdoor Environmental Adventures and Summer

Summer Submersions: Designing and Building Underwater ROVs (Remotely
operated vehicles)
Dates:
Monday, June 30 - July 3, 2008 (4 days)
Time: 9:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m.
Location: Nassau BOCES Brookville Environmental Center,
beaches and pools
For:
Students entering grades 5-7 and 8-12
Cost: $330 (Note: no
transportation for this program) -

After an introduction to buoyancy, electric currents, wiring, and
propulsion, students will work in small teams to design and build an
underwater ROV to accomplish certain tasks underwater. The culminating
experience will be a competition among the teams to see who can
accomplish the tasks in the shortest amount of time. The program will
also include information on the history of ROV's, how they are used
today and career opportunities in the submersible technology field.
Middle school students will work with partially assembled kits while the
high school students will build and design from scratch!

SUMMER MARINE BIOLOGY 2008
Dates:

and local beaches/aquarium
For:
Students entering grades 8-12
Cost: $1220.00 ( includes
transportation )
As a sea-going biologist, youll learn
about many kinds of marine
life
and their physical, chemical,
and biological environments at our
1600 acre Caumsett State Historic
Park, and other north and south
shore beaches, boats and local marine field trips.

Use sampling
devices such as an otter trawl and seine nets to collect fish, crabs, sea stars
and shrimp.

Conduct plankton
studies
-
Learn to measure
water salinity, turbidity and dissolved oxygen.
-
Boat trips! Go canoeing! Learn to snorkel! Go fishing!

Participate in a
cooperative research project on a topic of your group's choice and
present your final results research at our programs luncheon for
families on the final day.
This program changes year to year because conditions in the complex marine
environment provides unique opportunities from one summer to the next.
Students are welcome to repeat this annual event year after year.

General
Information for all Summer Programs:
- Daily
sessions are 9 a.m.- 3 p.m., unless otherwise arranged.
- Students
bring their own lunches unless otherwise directed.
- Programs
are held rain or shine, but may be modified due to weather conditions.
Rain gear should be packed daily.
- Parents
will receive written notification regarding centralized transportation
routes and bus schedules a few days before the start of the program.
"Transportation Provided" means that your child will be picked up and
dropped off at a school building or location within your district or a
neighboring district.
- All forms
and applications are available for participating districts - call for
your district's status and contact person.
