Summer Programs 2010

Our Outdoor Education Centers at Caumsett State Historic Park and Brookville provide access to outstanding outdoor habitats and facilities.  Buses from central locations bring participants to one of our centers by 9 a.m. and they leave the site at 3 p.m.  Our programs are guided by experienced Nassau BOCES naturalists. Summer 2010 - We had a great time!

Each year our three-week programs, as described below excite and engage kids from grades 4 - 12.

Our HS Summer Marine Biology students put together several PowerPoints to describe their experiences.:

SUMMER MARINE BIOLOGY 2010
Dates:
    Thursday, July 1– Thursday, July 22, 2010 (15 days)
Time:       9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Location: Caumsett State Historic Park, beaches, aquarium
For:
         Students entering grades 8-12
Tuition:
    $1275.00 ( includes transportation )

As a sea-going biologist, you’ll learn    about many kinds of marine life
 and their physical, chemical,
 and biological environments at our
 1600 acre Caumsett State Historic
 Park, and other north and south
 shore beaches, boats and local  
 marine field trips.
 

  • Use sampling devices such as an otter trawl and seine nets to collect fish, crabs, sea stars and shrimp. 

  • Conduct plankton studies.

  • Learn to measure water salinity, turbidity and dissolved oxygen. 

  • Boat trips! Go canoeing! Learn to snorkel! Go fishing!

  • Participate in a cooperative research project on a topic of your group's choice and present your final results research at our program’s luncheon for families on the final day. 

This program changes year to year because conditions in the complex marine environment provides unique opportunities from one summer to the next.  Students are welcome to repeat this annual event year after year. Download the Flyer here! (TBA)

OUTDOOR & ENVIRONMENTAL ADVENTURES

  • Get up close to the plants and animals that live in along our shores and in freshwater ponds. 

  • Boat trips! Go canoeing! Go fishing! 

  • Hike through fields and forests,
    build a survival shelter and solar still!

  • Prepare for the low and high elements of our project adventure course with group-challenging games!

  • Find your way using maps and compasses, and the latest in hand-held Global Positioning System technology!  Go Geocaching and Earthcaching!

  • ...and more!

General Information for all Summer Programs:

  • Daily sessions are 9 a.m.- 3 p.m., unless otherwise arranged.
  • Students bring their own lunches unless otherwise directed.
  • Programs are held rain or shine, but may be modified due to weather conditions. Rain gear should be packed daily.
  • Parents will receive written notification regarding centralized transportation routes and bus schedules a few days before the start of the program. "Transportation Provided" means that your child will be picked up and dropped off at a school building or location within your district or a neighboring district.
  • All forms and applications are available for participating districts - call for your district's status and contact person.
