Whales heard for the
first time in waters around
New York City
The
Bioacoustics
Research Program, a unit within the Cornell Lab of Ornithology,
develops digital recording equipment, computer software and algorithms
that are used by scientists around the world to study animal
communication
and to monitor the health of wildlife populations. Last
spring, the team
launched a real-time listening network (www.listenforwhales.org)
to
reduce the collisions between whales and ships in
Massachusetts Bay.

Bridge to the Pine Barrens:
The Long Island Pine
Barrens Society
has created an interactive website to help
students learn about
their local history, the environment in their
backyards, and most
importantly, the power of advocacy and activism. The
site features
mini-video lessons, original illustration, photos

science modules, and you can access a nice interactive about
ecosystems
around the world. Go to Populations and Ecosystems,
then click on Ecoregions, to find an interactive map.
Click on the
name of each kind of ecosystem to highlights each
ecosystem is.
That area of the map will show
more information,
including abiotic
and biotic info and the ability to get PDF files
with
info about each

Meet the Greens: This is an Activity Guide for adults who work
with
9 to 12-year
olds. It springs from a project called THE GREENS,
which is a PBS Web site that encourages kids to explore sustainability
and take action wherever they can.
The new Activity Guide pairs
hands-on activities to deepen kids'
understanding of topics like
recycling and
global warming with campaigns
to reduce junk mail and get drivers to
stop idling cars.
