Participants The Nassau BOCES School Library System's (NBSLS) Library Automation and Resource Sharing Services (LARSS) contains two components: implementing library automation systems and coordinating access to online databases. NBSLS personnel provide support and training to initiate and maintain library automation. Districts are helped to plan for an online catalog and circulation system, prepare the library collection (including the weeding of the collection), and convert library titles to machine readable (MARC) format. BOCES personnel design standard microcomputer hardware configurations based on school population and the number of library holdings; purchase and maintain necessary hardware and software; and train district personnel in the use of the online public access catalog and circulation system. Currently, thirty-seven school districts are members of LARSS. All costs including those for hardware, software, training, resource title conversion and access and maintenance of the regional database are part of the state-aidable service. NBSLS, as the aggregating agent, provides access to a variety of subscription-based online resources, such as Web-based indexes and encyclopedias at the greatest cost savings to school districts. LARSS provides support and training in the use of the online databases to support the curriculum needs of students. All subscription fees are state-aidable. There are currently 41 districts participating in the online database service. For more information, contact: Eva Efron, Director Carl Vitevitch, Program Specialist
