Interloan statistics should be maintained on the form enclosed in the printed NBSLS Directory. Statistics should be returned to NBSLS by the close of the school year. NBSLS reports interloan statistics to the State Education Department.

Union Catalog and Professional Collection
New York State library systems receive funding from the State Legislature to support the lending of resources between libraries. School, public, and academic/special library systems convert member library resource titles into Machine-Readable Cataloging (MARC) records, merge them, and create a Union Catalog. The Nassau BOCES School Library System Union Catalog can be accessed via the Internet from the NBSLS homepage. At present, the Union Catalog contains more than 450,000 unique titles.During the 2000 – 2001 school year newly converted titles will be merged into the Union Catalog.

Nassau County educators may visit the NBSLS offices in Massapequa Park to borrow from the NBSLS professional collection, which contains approximately 1500 books and other material, including 25 periodicals. NBSLS members can access the collection via the Internet and arrange for an interlibrary loan. The collection includes a wide range of topics of interest to library professionals.

To borrow resources from NBSLS member schools or from the NBSLS Professional Collection, schools with Internet access can search the Union Catalog by subject, title, or author. The borrower then contacts the holding library to make interloan arrangements. Schools without Internet access are encouraged to call Donna Slaski at the NBSLS office (608-6623) to arrange an interloan.

To borrow materials not available in the NBSLS Union Catalog or in the NBSLS Professional Collection, schools must complete the appropriate LILRC interloan form. Serial and Book forms are included in the NBSLS directory and on the NBSLS website. All required information must be filled in as well as verification of citation. Completed requests may be faxed to NBSLS (608-6695).Requested material is sent directly to the NBSLS office and then forwarded to the requesting library.
