County voters say “yes” to Nassau BOCES referendum

GARDEN CITY, NY, Feb. 10, 2009 — By a vote of 2,211 to 447, Nassau County residents approved Nassau BOCES’ referendum to purchase One Merrick Avenue, Westbury, N.Y. The facility will be home to nine major programs that provide 77 services to the 56 school districts of Nassau County.

"With threats of budget cuts and caps, it is vitally important for Nassau BOCES to do everything it can to reduce expenses for its local school districts," said Deputy Superintendent Dr. Robert J. Hanna. "We felt that purchasing this building would lead to long-term cost savings, and we are pleased that voters agreed.”
By purchasing the building instead of renting, Nassau BOCES expects to save school districts $20 million in facilities costs during the next 20 years.

Chosen for its centralized location, One Merrick Avenue will serve as a center for teaching and learning, supporting more than 17,000 teachers throughout the county. Furthermore, Nassau BOCES will use this facility to provide school districts with a variety of cooperative services that generate thousands of dollars in savings annually through consortium purchases, innovative product development and cost-effective shared services.
