Open House: What's happening this summer?

Summer Camp Open House nights are coming.

Have a passion for cooking, construction or video production? Spend your summer exploring these fields at a summer camp offered through a partnership between Nassau BOCES and Hofstra University. There’s a variety of exciting, fun, hands-on educational opportunities for students in grades 6-11. This unique summer camp offers programs in a variety of career fields including aviation, construction trades, culinary arts, digital music production, graphic design, marine biology, mechanical and automotive, STEAM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math), veterinary medicine and video production.   

Explore the opportunities at an upcoming Summer Camp Open House: Saturday, April 1 from noon–2 p.m. at the Nassau BOCES Joseph M. Barry Career & Technical Education Center; or Saturday, April 22 at the Hofstra University Physical Education Center. There’s a host of adventures awaiting campers this year:  

Aviation Academy
Let your curiosity soar in this safe yet exhilarating course for potential pilots. Take to the air without ever leaving the ground in Barry Tech’s cutting-edge flight simulator. Learn the basics of commercial flight, from flight planning and air traffic control to weather data. You’ll even have a chance to explore employment opportunities available in the industry.  

Culinary Arts Academy
Whether making your first foray into the kitchen or honing your culinary skills, the academy provides expert training in a real-world learning environment. Work in a state-of–the-art kitchen under the guidance of master chefs to learn the finer points of food preparation, knife skills, baking, kitchen safety, and the science behind the art of cooking.  

Construction Trade Academy
Get hands-on experience in a variety of construction trades including carpentry, plumbing, electrical and masonry. Learn the basic skills necessary to complete essential construction projects under the guidance of industry professionals.  

Mechanical and Automotive Institute
Car enthusiasts and anyone who simply loves working with his or her hands will enjoy this summer institute. Learn how to conduct inspections, air pressure and fluid checks, brake maintenance, tire repair and installation, and fuse and wiper blade replacement. There is a separate course on small engine repair in machines like lawn mowers and snow blowers.  

Dive into the thrilling world of marine biology!
In the Marine Exploration Technology course, join a team of fledgling engineers to design, build and test an underwater ROV (remotely operated vehicle) in Hofstra University’s Olympic-sized pool. Become a marine biologist in training at the Nassau BOCES Outdoor and Environmental Education Center where you’ll explore the unique habitats of Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve.  

Release your inner digital artist with video and graphic design courses. Get a glimpse into the world of professional music recording while receiving hands-on training in Digital Music Production. Study Video Production in a fully functional television studio, complete with control room. Learn Graphic Design using leading-edge software to create everything from T-shirts to children’s books.  

Animal and science lovers can follow their calling in the Veterinary Science program, with opportunities for everyone from beginners to advanced students. Study animal handling and grooming, health and nutrition, and anatomy and physiology. Work with all kinds of animals, from cats and dogs to horses and cows.
