Hearing ServicesStudent Disability: Hearing Impairment, Deafness Student Age: Birth to 21 Functional Hearing Screenings. Students that have a hearing impairment, or are suspected of having a hearing impairment, supported by an audiological report, are eligible for a Functional Hearing Screening administered by a certified Teacher of the Hearing Impaired. The process will evaluate whether a hearing impairment adversely affects a child's educational performance, and a report will be generated that offers recommendations to the district CSE, including possible models of services and IEP goals/objectives. The District Based Classroom Program for the Hearing Impaired provides full-day comprehensive New York State Standards-based academic education programs designed to meet students' individual needs at all levels in a mainstream setting within the East Meadow School District. A challenging academic curriculum, enhanced by a language enriched environment affords students the opportunity to become successful learners and competent young adults. Spoken language and the optimum use of residual hearing form the program's auditory/oral approach. Audition is the primary component of all interventions and instruction. For some students, instruction may be combined with a multisensory oral approach and the discriminate use of signed English. Curriculum modifications are used to meet the students' specific language needs and skill levels. Each student's IEP guide the team of professional, certified staff to make decisions to provide each learner with knowledge, while strengthening their speech and language skills. The program is equipped with a state of the art audiological lab that provides annual audiological evaluations and hearing aid analysis. When appropriate, an FM auditory trainer, a teacher-to-student communication device, is worn by each student to optimize his/her listening skills. There are unlimited opportunities for students to be mainstreamed for academics, specials (such as lunch, art, physical education, etc.) and school or community activities. All speech/language sessions are highly individualized and concentrate on aural/habilitation/rehabilitation. Students receive related services as indicated on their IEPs (OT, PT, PSY, etc.). Computer instruction and specialized computer programs enhance classroom lessons and speech and language development. Field trips promote academic concepts, language development and social interactions. Prevocational and occupational education training, as well as preparation for post secondary education, is provided as indicated in students' transition plans. All of these experiences stimulate, motivate and expose students to speech and language throughout the school day in a natural setting and promote the development of the skills and attitude needed to allow our students to integrate successfully into the hearing world. The Itinerant Program for the Hearing Impaired provides services to students with hearing impairments in schools throughout Nassau County. These services are provided by teachers who are licensed teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing. Due to the diversity of the population, service delivery is determined on an individual basis. As professionals, itinerant teachers maximize their student's auditory skills by focusing on auditory processing and auditory discrimination skills; communication needs including expressive oral and written skills; receptive language skills; and working cooperatively with sign language interpreters when appropriate. Itinerant teachers have the expertise to work with a variety of hearing losses, students with cochlear implants, state of the art hearing amplification technology, as well as classroom amplification. Consultants Services and Workshops support district personnel by providing assessment and evaluation; educational and instructional strategies, materials and resources, and administrative liaison to meet the needs of hearing impaired students within their educational settings. Although Consultants are teachers of the hearing impaired, they do not provide direct instruction to the hearing impaired student. Consultants will confer regularly with staff and the student for informational purposes. All Students receiving hearing services (classroom, itinerant or consultation) through Nassau BOCES are provided with annual audiological evaluations as part of the services they receive. Audiological services are also offered to local school districts to meet the needs of students with hearing impairments and auditory processing disorders. These services include: Audiological Evaluations. Students can receive an evaluation that includes pure tone and speech audiometry and tympanometry. Audiological Evaluations with Aided Testing. Aided testing with personal hearing aids and/or FM unit can be included in the evaluation for an additional fee. FM Evaluations. An initial FM evaluation will determine the appropriate FM unit for student. Calibration of the FM unit is included in this service. Note: a current audiogram must be provided with the Audiological Services Request Form or a request for an audiological evaluation. Earmolds for FM Amplification. Custom earmolds are required for use of some FM systems and are made by an audiologist. Auditory Processing Evaluation. This evaluation is provided for students age seven and above, generally with normal hearing and intelligence, who are suspected of having auditory processing disorders. The auditory processing evaluation includes: a peripheral audiological evaluation, tests of speech recognition in quiet and noise, tests to assess auditory processing disorders (including but not limited to dichotic listening tests, distorted speech and temporal ordering tasks), an evaluation report with recommendations. FM Equipment Rental. Low gain FM amplification can be rented to be used by students diagnosed with one of the following: unilateral hearing loss, fluctuation conductive hearing loss and auditory processing disorders. Equipment is returned to BOCES in June for servicing. Additional information: The services described above are provided at no additional cost to a student receiving hearing services (classroom or itinerant) through BOCES. They are available for a fee to district students who do not receive BOCES services.
