Parent-Child Home Program
The Parent-Child Home Program is a home-visiting,
parenting/early childhood education program in which trained home visitors
encourage parents to use educational toys and books with their toddlers
(two to four years old) in an effort to promote their language and social
development prior to their starting school. By focusing on families whose
children are at the greatest risk of school failure (because of a variety
of factors including low-income parents with limited education, teen
parents, parents who have limited literacy), the PCHP demonstrates to
parents how they, along with their child, can enjoy and learn from simple
educational and pro-social activities. One toy or book is given to the
family at no cost each week. The program is listed in the U.S. Department
of Education’s yearly “Educational Program That Work,” and is eligible in
some school districts for Chapter I and other federal and state funding.
