Safe Schools / Healthy Students
The Safe Schools/Healthy Students initiative is an
innovative federal program funded in 77 school districts across the
country by the United States Departments of Education, Health and Human
Resources, and Justice. Its purpose is to help school districts and
communities develop and implement comprehensive community-wide strategies
to create safe and drug-free schools and to promote healthy childhood
development to enable students to thrive in an academic environment free
from violence and other destructive behaviors. Nassau BOCES and other
SS/HS sites that received grants have programs that address these six
elements: safe school environment; prevention and early intervention
programs that address violence, alcohol and other drug abuse; school and
community mental health preventive and treatment intervention services;
early childhood psychosocial and emotional development programs;
educational reform; and safe school policies.
