The first time I attended clinic at Nassau University Medical Center in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in-patient I met this patient who has Multiple Sclerosis. MS is a condition when your nerves are damaged in the spine which causes weakness, fatigue, pain and flares in the neck and spine. A lot of people who have MS can not walk and are usually constricted to only using a wheelchair or being bedridden. It is very hard to improve when someone is diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
Yesterday I met Shelby Caban, a 24 year old heart transplant recipient and cancer survivor. All of her life she’s dealt with health problems honestly not knowing how long she’ll be alive and that definitely made me emotional because a lot of people including myself take their house, family, friends and health for granted. I am always determined to do well in school but, I get lazy when it comes to homework. As a future college student I should try to ignore my minor everyday struggles because Shelby would get up even if she wasn’t feeling well walking around with a face mask and a bald head getting lots of concerned or dirty looks. She always had a positive attitude and that was beneficial for her health physically and mentally. Overall I hope to be as strong and hardworking as Shelby one day.
