The Nassau BOCES Administrative Operations Budget receives overwhelming approval

The Nassau BOCES 2025-2026 Administrative Operations Budget received strong support. Fifty-three of the 56 component district Nassau County boards of education approved the budget. Two districts did not vote and one vote was voided due to an issue. Two incumbents were returned to the Nassau BOCES Board along with one new member.

“We deeply appreciate the continued support of our component districts,” said Larry J. Leaven, Nassau BOCES District Superintendent and Chief Executive Officer. “Our team carefully evaluates every expenditure to keep costs down while maintaining the quality of our services.”

The Nassau BOCES Administrative Operations Budget covers the central management costs for the Agency, including expenses such as the Office of the District Superintendent, Human Resources and Business Services. By law, the budget also includes the cost of retiree health insurance.

Board President Deborah Coates added, “We are grateful for this strong show of support and thank our districts for their partnership.”

The Administrative Operations Budget for 2025-2026 totals $27,877,216, a 2.7% increase over the current year. It includes $13.9 million for retiree health benefits, reflecting a 1.6% increase from the 2024-2025 budget.

The Board Election

Five candidates vied for the three open seats. Two incumbents, Fran N. Langsner (44 votes) and Robert “B.A.” Schoen (39 votes), were reelected. They will be joined by Michael A. Jaime (27 votes). Incumbent Ronald Ellerbe and Douglas J. Pascarella each received 13 votes.

Mr. Ellerbe has served on the Board since 2007.

Ms. Langsner joined the Nassau BOCES Board in 2013 and was a member of the Great Neck UFSD Board of Education (BOE) from 2000 to 2012. Mr. Schoen joined the Nassau BOCES Board in 2009 and was a member of the Baldwin UFSD BOE from 1996 to 2012.

Mr. Jaime served on the Elmont UFSD BOE for 18 years, from 2007 to 2025. He also served on the Sewanhaka CHSD from 2007 to 2014 and 2016 to 2023. He was a member of the Board of Directors for both the National School Boards Association and the New York State School Boards Association and is currently on the Board of the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association.
