Adult Education Spring Open House

This spring, the Adult Education program invites Long Islanders to discover training opportunities that will improve their current job situation or launch them on an entirely new career. New course offerings for the upcoming school year will be announced at the open house.

The Adult Education Open House will take place on Wednesday, May 21 from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Nassau BOCES Joseph M. Barry Career and Technical Education Center, 1196 Prospect Avenue in Westbury. Attendees will learn about a variety of career training programs from the industry experts who teach them, and get a first-hand look at the leading-edge, professional training spaces where the classes will take place.

“We are committed to helping you find the right career to fit your life,” said Brad Slepian, Assistant Principal of Nassau BOCES Adult Education. “We work with industry partners to guide our curriculum and to ensure that our instruction is up to date with current industry standards. We’ll train you to fill positions with local employers and help you to get your foot in the door of major growth industries. From there, the sky is the limit.”

Instructional spaces include: a state-of-the-art industrial kitchen for culinary students; a professional auto shop equipped with the latest tools that meet industry standards; fully furnished salons for beauty students; simulated clinical suites run by experienced healthcare professionals; animal service areas where veterinary and grooming students will work with live animals; and a broad industrial space where construction students can build and repair using all the tools of the trade for plumbing, trade electric, HVAC and welding.

Among some of the Adult Education key offerings:

Health Occupations: In response to the ever-expanding need for healthcare professionals on Long Island, Adult Education offers a comprehensive suite of training programs for in-demand workers, including Clinical Medical Assistants, Dental Assistants and Phlebotomy Technicians.

Beauty: Learn from top professionals in the beauty and cosmetology industry and spend time in some of the best salons on Long Island. Become versed in the latest styles and techniques used today, while preparing for New York State Certification exams. For over 40 years, Nassau BOCES has been preparing adult students in their comprehensive 1000-hour NYS Cosmetology Licensing Program. New to the program this fall, Nassau BOCES Adult Education will now offer a 500-hour NYS Barbering Licensing Program, as well as a 325-hour Nail & Wax Technician NYS Licensing Program.

Welding: The construction trades have always been in high demand, and one of the most lucrative fields in this profession is welding. This coming year, the Adult Education Welding Program is more expansive than ever, including courses in Welding Fundamentals and Qualification, AWS Qualification Test Preparation, Blueprint Reading, OSHA-30 and Site Safety Training.
