Nassau BOCES appoints new Director of Human Resources

The Nassau BOCES Board of Education has proudly appointed Dr. Sam Gergis as the agency’s new Director of Human Resources, effective July 1. The appointment was officially approved at the Board’s May 1 meeting.

Dr. Gergis brings more than 17 years of experience as a school district administrator, including extensive leadership in human resources, business operations and educational policy. Most recently, he served as Assistant Superintendent for Business & Operations at Manhasset Union Free School District, where he led teams focused on advancing student achievement, fiscal stewardship and operational excellence. His previous roles include Assistant Superintendent positions for Sayville UFSD, South Country CSD, Huntington UFSD and Eastern Suffolk BOCES. 

In his new role at Nassau BOCES, Dr. Gergis will oversee all operational aspects of the Human Resources Department, including personnel management, onboarding and exit processes, labor negotiations, employee recordkeeping, and professional development for administration and office support staff. Dr. Gergis will report to Thomas McGrath, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Regional Schools and Instructional Programs, and together they will work collaboratively with leaders across Nassau BOCES to advance best practices in all matters pertaining to Human Resources.

Throughout his career, Dr. Gergis has been responsible for supervising all facets of HR operations, overseeing business office functions, developing multi-million-dollar budgets and coordinating Agencywide initiatives in partnership with educators and community stakeholders. He is known for his data-driven decision-making, strong knowledge of New York State Education Law and creative problem-solving skills. Dr. Gergis is also proficient in a range of technical and financial platforms, supporting a modern, forward-thinking approach to school administration. 

District Superintendent Larry Leaven welcomed Dr. Gergis to the Nassau BOCES leadership team, stating, "Dr. Gergis brings an impressive blend of experience, innovation and a deep commitment to the success of both staff and students. Dr. Gergis holds an Ed.D. in Educational and Policy Leadership from Hofstra University, along with advanced certificates in School District Leadership and School District Business Leadership. He also holds a Certificate of Leadership from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. 

Dr. Gergis earned a master’s degree in Foundations of Education and a certificate in Curriculum Management and Evaluation from Hofstra, as well as a bachelor’s degree in economics from Boston University, where he completed research for the Einstein Papers Project.
