Students from Seaman Neck Middle School and elementary students from the Children’s Readiness Center (CRC) visited Nassau BOCES Brookville Environmental Education Center on May 12. Together, they took part in team-building games, planted trees, and explored the outdoors on a nature hike scavenger hunt.
Throughout the year, Seaman Neck’s middle school students have been learning what it means to be role models for CRC’s 5–8-year-old students. In turn, the CRC students have been practicing how to mirror the mature behaviors of their older peers. This mentorship has helped both groups strengthen their social skills.
This unique partnership was developed by Seaman Neck Middle School Health Teacher Donna Pedone and CRC Classroom Teacher Jennifer Fitzpatrick. With six CRC classes located within Seaman Neck Middle School, the teachers launched a mentorship program that promotes positive interactions between the two age groups.
The Brookville trip marked the first time the students participated in an off-campus activity together.
