Dina L. Colón has been appointed Supervisor II of the Nassau BOCES Adult Education Career and Employment Center (CEC). The Center is a vital part of the agency’s Adult Education Program, which provides career and technical education for adults, as well as English as a Second Language courses, and prep for students to earn a High School Equivalency Diploma.
“Even as an adult, changing, starting, or following your dream is scary,” Ms. Colón has observed of adult students. “That is why it is crucial that all of us here at the CEC work together to be their support system, encouraging them along their journey. While our students are fully independent adults, they still need educators who are willing to stand by them and guide them to the finish line.”
Ms. Colón is a self-motivated leader with over 20 years of experience as an educator, including as a bilingual school counselor and data-inquiry team member. She has helped create and develop school curriculum and student behavioral plans. She has mentored fellow educators through professional development on various topics, including social and emotional learning (SEL).
“As I see it, the trades are essential to the future of our workforce,” said Ms. Colón. “Our industries are evolving and becoming more innovative, so education must also adapt to keep pace. That is why one of my primary goals is to increase enrollment in our cutting-edge programs and develop new courses, ensuring our students remain at the forefront of the industry.”
Ms. Colón began her career as a paraprofessional with the NYC Department of Education. She then progressed to become a bilingual school counselor before advancing to the role of educational administrator. As an energetic and supportive leader, she consistently prioritizes students' needs. Ms. Colón collaborates closely with students and their families, as well as various educational stakeholders, including community partners.
She holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from Long Island University, where she specialized in bilingual school counseling. Additionally, she has obtained advanced certification in mental health counseling from Alfred University and in school-building leadership from the College of St. Rose.
The CEC offers one-on-one support and expert guidance in resume writing, interview techniques and completing a job application, among other employability skills. It is staffed by a team of professional counselors dedicated to helping students with goal planning, who work with employers throughout Long Island to establish students in successful careers. Classes incorporate a variety of professional skills including realistic workplace expectations and customer service, and feature trade tips from industry experts.
