Nassau BOCES is proud to announce the appointment of Beata Walerych-Janus, MPH, as the new head of our Health & Safety Training and Information Service. With more than 20 years of experience in health and safety compliance, training and program development, Ms. Walerych-Janus brings a wealth of expertise and a proven track record of leadership to this critical role. Her predecessor Peter LaDuca retired in December 2024.

The Health & Safety Training and Information Service is nationally recognized for its leadership in helping Nassau County school districts navigate the complex landscape of federal, state, and local health and safety regulations. The program is designed to foster safe, healthy environments conducive to both teaching and learning while providing cost-effective solutions tailored to the unique needs of schools.

“We are excited to have Beata Walerych-Janus at the helm of this essential service,” said Larry Leaven, District Superintendent. “Her expertise, dedication and innovative approach to health and safety make her the perfect choice to lead this essential service. Under her leadership, I am confident we will continue to set the standard for excellence in school safety and compliance.”

Ms. Walerych-Janus has been a cornerstone of this service for nearly two decades. She joined Nassau BOCES in 2003 as a Safety Training Assistant and advanced to her most recent role as Safety Training-Program Manager in 2015. Her accomplishments include:

  • Developing and delivering comprehensive health and safety training programs covering emergency preparedness, violence prevention, chemical safety, and more.
  • Serving as a liaison between school districts and regulatory agencies, ensuring compliance and effective communication.
  • Leading district-level and building-level health and safety committees, as well as organizing emergency preparedness drills and exercises.
  • Supervising program staff and mentoring new team members.

Nassau BOCES is also planning additional enhancements to the Health & Safety Training and Information Service to meet the evolving needs of our districts and ensure compliance with emerging regulations.

“I am honored to take on this new role and to continue supporting Nassau County school districts in creating safe and healthy environments,” said Ms. Walerych-Janus. “The Health & Safety Training and Information Service plays a vital role in ensuring our schools are prepared to meet challenges and comply with essential safety regulations. I look forward to building on our successes and driving innovation in the field.”

Ms. Walerych-Janus has a Master of Public Health from New York University and a Bachelor of Science in Health Care Administration from St. John’s University.
