PowerSchool, Nassau BOCES' student information system provider, announced a breach of its system involving more than 60 million records in January. PowerSchool discovered the cybersecurity incident involving the unauthorized export of certain personal information through its PowerSource portal, a customer support platform, on December 28, 2024. The company promptly engaged third-party cybersecurity experts to conduct a thorough forensic investigation and to monitor for any misuse of the affected information. At this time, PowerSchool has reported no evidence of identity theft related to this incident.
The affected Nassau BOCES information includes only basic directory details such as parent/guardian and student names, addresses, email addresses and phone numbers. Additionally, it involves certain student-specific information, including birth date, gender, ethnicity, primary language, grades, discipline records, school ID and special education classification. Nassau BOCES does not store social security numbers, financial information or IEP (Individualized Education Program) information in the PowerSchool system.
