Student Cellphone and Personal Device Policy
To help maintain a focused, safe, and engaging learning environment, Nassau BOCES limits the use of personal internet-enabled devices — including cellphones and smartwatches — during the school day. This policy applies to all students in Nassau BOCES instructional programs.
Board Policy – Student Use of Personal Electronic Devices (Policy #5695)
What devices are covered?
Devices that can connect to the Internet or run social media applications — such as smartphones, tablets and smartwatches — are not permitted for personal use during the school day unless, as directed by Nassau BOCES staff, used for educational purposes. These devices must be silenced and stored in designated locations upon arrival.
How does device storage work?
Career and Technical Education (CTE) Programs
- Each classroom is equipped with secure storage lockers.
- Students store their phones at the start of class.
- Each student keeps the key to their locker on a wristlet.
- Devices are returned at dismissal.
Special Education Programs
- Phone storage procedures may vary by building and program.
- Storage is designed to meet the needs of each student population.
- Students regain access to their devices at the end of the day.
Reaching Students During the School Day
If you need to reach your child during the school day, please contact the school/program's main office. Students who need to contact home may also do so through school staff.
Exceptions to the Policy
Students may be granted exceptions for:
- Managing health conditions (e.g., diabetes, asthma)
- Translation services
- Family caregiving responsibilities
- Educational needs documented in an IEP or 504 Plan
To request an exception, parents/guardians should contact the school/program principal or Committee on Special Education (CSE). Supporting documentation may be required.
What happens if a student violates the policy?
Repeated violations will be addressed through the Agency’s Code of Conduct and appropriate interventions.
