New Assistant to the Superintendent (Human Resources, and Regional Schools and Instructional Programs)

Thomas McGrath has been promoted to the position of Assistant to the Superintendent for HRes, and Regional Schools and Instructional Programs, at Nassau BOCES. In this capacity, he will continue to manage the daily operations of the Department of Human Resources, where he has served as Executive Director during the past year. He will also provide oversight to other vital agency programs including the Department of Regional Schools and Instructional Programs. This position was effective July 1, 2022.

The move comes as part of a thoughtful review of current administrative structure and a realignment plan approved the by the Nassau BOCES Board.

“Mr. McGrath has been doing an exceptional job since starting with the agency,” said Nassau BOCES District Superintendent, Dr. Robert R. Dillon. “We know he will continue with his fine work in his new position.”

During his extensive career in education spanning more than three decades, Mr. McGrath has worn several administrative hats. At Eastern Suffolk BOCES, he served as Program Administrator for Human Resources and Principal and Assistant Principal for Career and Technical and Special Education Programs.  He has served as Assistant Principal for William Floyd School District on Long Island and Forsyth County Schools in Georgia.

In addition to his administrative experience, Mr. McGrath has a solid background in counseling, having worked as a guidance counselor for Roswell High School in Georgia, as well as for the New York City School system. Finally, he began his career as an addiction counselor and acupuncturist for Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn.

Mr. McGrath has served as an executive board member of the Suffolk County High School Principal's Association and has been an active member of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the Long Island Association of Career and Technical Education Administrators, the New York State Management Advocates for School Labor Affairs, the Society for Human Resource Management, and the Personnel Administrators Council.

“It is my intention to learn all that I can about our agency’s vast spectrum of schools and programs so that I can fully support students and staff alike,” Mr. McGrath said of his new role. “I am looking forward to collaborating with Nassau BOCES Cabinet members and my fellow administrators to ensure that we are providing the best and most consistent services we can to all students across Long Island. I believe that my years of experience, combined with my understanding of educational trends, afford me the ability to provide better oversight.” 

Mr. McGrath holds a master’s degree in education, guidance and counseling from Long Island University, and a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He holds certification in educational leadership from the State University of Georgia, and New York State certification in school, district and business administration, and school administration.
