The Nassau BOCES 2023-2024 Administrative Operations Budget received strong support. Fifty-three of the 56 component district Nassau County boards of education approved the budget. One district voted against the budget, one district did not vote, and one district’s ballot did not meet municipal law requirements. In addition, three incumbents were returned to the Nassau BOCES Board.
 
“We want to thank our component districts for their continued support,” said James Widmer, Nassau BOCES Deputy Superintendent. “We are careful to weigh each expenditure in an effort to keep costs as low as possible while maintaining the integrity of our programs.”
The Nassau BOCES Administrative Operations Budget covers the central management costs for the Agency, including expenses such as the Office of the District Superintendent, Human Resources and Business Services. In addition, by law, health insurance costs of Nassau BOCES retirees are also included. 
 
“We appreciate the overwhelming show of support for our efforts and thank our component districts for approving our budget,” said Nassau BOCES Board President Susan Bergtraum. 
 
The Administrative Operations Budget for 2023-2024 totals $25,220,812, which represents a 6% increase over the 2022-2023 budget. Included in the budget is $12.6 million for retiree health benefits. This represents a 7.8% increase from 2022-2023. The operational portion of this budget increased by 4.3% year over year.

The Board Election

Three incumbent members of the Nassau BOCES Board were unopposed and re-elected. Deborah Coates of East Meadow UFSD, Lawrence Greenstein of Port Washington UFSD and Eric Schultz of Plainview-Old Bethpage CSD will serve three-year terms ending on June 30, 2026.

Ms. Coates has been a member of the Nassau BOCES Board since 2008. She was elected vice president in July 2019 and formerly served as district clerk. Ms. Coates served on the East Meadow UFSD Board of Education from 2002 to 2008, holding the roles of president and vice president during her tenure.

Mr. Greenstein joined the Nassau BOCES Board in 2020. He also serves as Nassau County vice president on the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association’s Executive Committee. He served on the Port Washington UFSD Board of Education from 2005 to 2021, holding the roles of president and vice president during his tenure.

Mr. Schultz joined the Nassau BOCES Board in 2001, serving as president and vice president during his tenure. He served on the Plainview-Old Bethpage CSD Board of Education from 1988 to 2000, including two terms as president.
