This is Your Brain on Nature
This PowerPoint Presentation will provide an overview of some of the research findings. Use it at your next Board meeting when proposing your environmental field trips! Much of the research stated in the presentation is from Richard Louv's books (sited below) and from "Time Out" from the National Wildlife Federation
Louv's first book, Last Child in the Woods was a call to action and provided educators and parents alike with evidence of the direct correlation between a lack of outdoor time to an increase in "nature-deficit disorder". In The Nature Principle, Louv adds additional research, anecdotal evidence and personal stories to demonstrate the importance of the restorative powers of the natural world and that it can boost mental acuity and creativity; promote health and wellness; build smarter and more sustainable businesses, communities, and economies; and strengthen human bonds. Vitamin N, Louv's newest book (4/2016), acts as an inspirational guidebook for families and communities.
The No Child Left Inside Coalition is a broad-based organization made up of more than 1,000 member groups from across the United States. The membership includes environmental, educational, business, public health, outdoor recreation and conservation groups. With tens of millions of members represented, the NCLI Coalition speaks for a diverse group of Americans who believe young people should receive a strong education about their natural world.
The Coalition’s focus is passage of the Federal No Child Left Inside Act. This legislation would authorize major new funding for states to provide high-quality, environmental instruction. Funds would support outdoor learning activities both at school and in non-formal environmental education centers, teacher training, and the creation of state environmental literacy plans.

NCLI - Rethinking No Child Left Behind
The Long Island Nature Collaborative for Kids has been active in reaching out to schools, libraries, nature centers, and child care agencies along with landscapers and architects to develop Nature Explore Classrooms across Long Island. It was originally an initiative of the Early Years Institute but now is under the leadership of Seatuck Environmental Association

New York is joining a national movement in stride with the Children and Nature Network founded by Richard Louv, author of the award-winning book, Last Child in the Woods. This movement is intended to reconnect children to the outdoors, helping them become more capable of making environmentally literate decisions that not only protect the environment but lead to a prosperous economy and healthy citizens.
The New York State Outdoor Education Association (NYSOEA) and partners are working together to build a strong coalition of organizations, schools, businesses and agencies from a broad representation that recognize the importance of environmental awareness and understanding for a healthy and sustainable world.
