Nassau BOCES announces strategic reorganization to optimize efficiencies following recent staff retirements

New administrative structure developed by Nassau County school districts for Nassau County school districts is projected to save more than $500,000

Following four recent retirements at the administrative level, Nassau BOCES announced changes to its internal administrative structure and the hiring of two new Executive Directors. These changes are intended to better serve the student population while enhancing efficiencies that are projected to save Nassau County school districts more than $500,000. The two new Executive Directors will be Patricia A. Schwetz, who will lead the Department of Special Education following the retirement of former Executive Director Karen Ellis, and Dr. Carla Theodorou, who will lead the Department of Regional Schools and Instructional Programs following the retirement of Gene Silverman.

“Nassau BOCES is dedicated to empowering Nassau County’s public school districts and ensuring that all children receive the resources they need to succeed both in the classroom and beyond,” said District Superintendent Dr. Robert R. Dillon. “Recent retirements have afforded us an opportunity to review our processes and determine the best ways to support students. We are excited for this new reorganization to take place, and we appreciate the patience and the professionalism of our staff as it comes to fruition.”

Mrs. Schwetz has worked for Nassau BOCES since 1999, most recently as Assistant Director of Special Education. Dr. Theodorou has more than 30 years in education. She was the founding Principal of the Benjamin Franklin High School for Finance & IT in New York City. The agency is also planning to hire an Executive Director of Human Resources to replace recently retired Dr. Tracey Nekulak.

In addition to hiring two new executive directors, Nassau BOCES also took the opportunity to reassess its administrative processes to better streamline its ability to provide high-quality academic and support services. To bring additional perspective and transparency into this assessment, Nassau BOCES recruited a team of three component school districts to make strategic recommendations.

One of the recent retirements was the Executive Director of the agency’s Department of Strategic Initiatives. Instead of filling this position, one of the recommendations calls for this strategic work to be conducted throughout the agency.

In December, the agency’s Deputy Superintendent Dr. Lydia Begley will retire and a search for her replacement has already commenced. To further maximize efficiencies, the Associate Superintendent for Administrative Services position is being eliminated. The current duties and responsibilities of the Associate Superintendent for Administrative Services will be shared between the Associate Superintendent for Business Services and the Associate Superintendent/Deputy Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Educational Services.

“Because we have consistency and vast institutional knowledge in other longtime employees, administrators and our Board of Education members,” said Dr. Dillon, “we had an extraordinary opportunity to re-evaluate each of these open positions and explore how to really Build the BOCES of the Future, which is one of our strategic goals. Nassau BOCES is incredibly fortunate to have a talented faculty who put the needs of students first, and we will continue to look for talented staff members to join our team within this new internal structure to further Nassau BOCES’ mission.”
