David Sisco and Laura Josepher, authors of “Mastering College Musical Theatre Auditions: Sound Advice for the Student, Teacher, and Parent,” visited the Long Island High School for the Arts recently, giving students invaluable advice on how to conduct a successful college audition.

“You have to figure out ‘How do I stand out?’ said Josepher. “They’re not just looking for talent, they’re looking for people who will be with them for the next four years.”

Sisco gave tips on how to prepare with a pianist, as well as how to present oneself on stage. “[Being] loud is not an emotion,” he said. “It’s also not an expression. I see so many people treating their auditions like it’s an American Idol contest. It’s not.”

Both Sisco and Josepher have additional tips on preparation (eat a good breakfast!), keeping hydrated, and advised students that they take notes after their audition to record what they did right or what they thought they could do better in the future.
