Long Islanders who are working to improve themselves and their current employment prospects will get a helping hand

GARDEN CITY, N.Y., August 13, 2019 — Long Islanders who are working to improve themselves and their current employment prospects will get a helping hand from Nassau BOCES this fall. The agency’s Adult Learning Center (ALC) will soon hold open enrollment for a variety of classes including English as a Second Language (ESL), Adult Basic Education (ABE) and High School Equivalency (HSE).

 

New this year are Pathway to Employment for English Language Learners (PEELL) classes, offering a better job outlook to students for whom English is a second language (ESL). PEELL classes combine English language education with hands-on job training, helping ESL students to get career-ready.

 

Registration for fall classes runs from August 23 through September 23. Prospective students must register in person at one of the locations listed below, at the specified dates and times. Students can enroll in PEELL classes at any registration location.

Aug. 26, 9 a.m. & 6 p.m. – Levittown, St. Bernard’s School                                   

Aug. 27, 10 a.m. – Freeport Memorial Library                     

Aug. 28, 6 p.m. – Westbury, Joseph M. Barry Career & Technical Education Center

Sept. 11, 6 p.m. – Freeport J.W. Dodd Middle School

Sept. 16, 6 p.m. – Valley Stream Memorial Middle School

Prospective students should plan to be at registration for at least four hours. Photo ID is required for all students at all locations. Students must be at least 18 years of age and not enrolled in any local school district.

 

There is a nonrefundable registration fee of $100 payable by money order due at the first class. There are additional fees for textbooks and or computer software based on class assignment.
