Devoted educator and administrator appointed assistant principal at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech
Sean Johnson is a committed educator who believes in collaboration, communication and teacher development. A devoted life-long learner, one of his primary goals is to continue to grow as an educator. He brings this enthusiasm for learning, along with a solid background as a teacher and administrator, to his role as Assistant Principal at Barry Tech.
“There’s such a variety of programs here,” Mr. Johnson said of Barry Tech. “We’re teaching 21st-century career skills. I want to help get kids started on a path that can become a really viable career. It’s a hands-on opportunity to impact students’ lives.”
Mr. Johnson is already working to make that impact. He believes in using data to drive instruction and to inform the future development of curriculum, making it even more relevant to students’ careers. “The steps we take in the short term will become bigger and more involved, leading to the realization of a long-term instructional plan,” he said.
Mr. Johnson began his career as a teacher in the New York City school system. His potential as an educational leader was soon realized, and in six short years he was appointed to the role of English Department Coordinator. Having demonstrated his ability as an educational leader, he was then chosen to serve as Assistant Principal. Understanding his potential, Nassau BOCES selected him as Assistant Principal of Barry Tech.
“This opportunity allows me to broaden my experience,” Mr. Johnson said of his new role. “I’m meeting with students and getting involved with the way different programs work. Barry Tech teaches students a sense of responsibility and accountability,” he added. “They all have a genuine desire to be here. There’s a sense of community.”
Mr. Johnson holds a Certificate of Advanced Study in School Building Leadership from the College Of Saint Rose, and both a master’s and bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
