Nafesa Khan has been named Assistant Principal at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech. In this position she’ll be responsible for building relationships with all of the school’s stakeholders.

Ms. Khan brings her years of experience to the position from her work as an English Language Arts teacher at the Math and Science Exploratory School and Richmond Hill High School, both part of the New York City Department of Education. During her time with the New York City school system, she worked as a lead teacher, mentor, and grade coordinator, and established a "New Teacher Committee," where new teachers gained social support.

“I wanted to take on a leadership role at Nassau BOCES in Career and Technical Education (CTE) in particular, because the program is so impressive,” says Ms. Khan. “It is refreshing to see all the real-world applications happening in classrooms. As a teacher, I always reflected on my lessons and tried to infuse real life applications. I found that there was more buy in when students felt as if they were being asked to complete meaningful activities.’

Ms. Khan holds School Business Leader (SBL) and School District Leader (SDL) certifications from the College of St. Rose. She earned a Master of Science Education, as well as a Bachelor of Art from Queens College and is certified by New York State for Initial Educational Leadership Building.

“There are amazing people at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, from the Custodians, Teacher Aides, Counselors, Security, Teachers, Students and Administrators. It is a pleasure to join such a supportive environment, says Ms. Khan. “I want to continue to cultivate relationships and ensure that there is clear communication amongst all stakeholders. As a first-year administrator, I know it is essential to have my learning hat on and learn from the experts, the teachers, and the students. I value honesty, integrity, communication and efficiency and I hope to bring those traits to this role.”
