Lynbrook senior complete studies with Nassau BOCES Online Learning Academy
Nassau BOCES Online Learning Academy (OLA) has given many Nassau County students the opportunity to achieve their goal of graduating high school. One such student, Gavin Belfi, was unable to attend regular classes at Lynbrook High School and did not think he would ever finish school. But, with the help of his district and Nassau BOCES, Gavin was able to take 12 online courses, both required and electives, and earn enough credits to graduate this month. He plans to continue his studies this fall at Nassau Community College.
“Using the online system to complete my diploma has been a great resource for me and without it I would have probably dropped out. I know I needed to finish school, but was so discouraged ... This has gotten my confidence back and it has been a great resource that should be available to more students,” says Gavin.
“Students get the opportunity to take online courses and get to know how to adjust to this teaching in order to be successful,” says Elisa Maggi, Program Supervisor for the Nassau BOCES Center for Online Learning.
Lynbrook Director of Special Services Arlene Mishanie explained that she had a non-traditional student who she knew needed to graduate. “I learned about the online program through my administration. Gavin received significant support from the online teachers keeping in touch with him, his parents and me. Nassau BOCES online staff personally met with him to set up and put everything in place. The student was very motivated and was able to succeed,” stated Mishanie.
The OLA is a full-service, online learning solution administered by Nassau BOCES. The OLA provides administrative oversight, Teacher of Records, student data management, virtual and personal support services. Students are provided with support not only from their home district, but with a Virtual Teacher who ‘meets’ with the student once a week for up to one hour. The Virtual Teacher is also available to answers questions and provide support through email. Classes are offered for both required and elective courses.
