Long Island High School for the Arts students inducted into national honor societies

Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts Dance students were inducted into the National Honor Society for Dance Arts


Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts Dance students were inducted into the National Honor Society for Dance Arts in a special ceremony held recently in the Rosalind Joel Conservatory for Music and Theatre building on the school’s campus in Syosset.

 

Dozens of students from school districts in Nassau and Suffolk counties, all of whom are attending Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), were inducted into four prestigious national honor societies recently.

At a special ceremony held on the LIHSA campus in the Rosalind Joel Conservatory for Music and Theatre building, the students were recognized not only for their extraordinary artistic talent, but also for their academic achievements and leadership in dance, art, acting and music.

The students received recognition from The National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA); The National Art Honor Society (NAHS); International Thespian Society (ITS); and Tri-M National Music Honor Society (A program of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME).

The NHSDA, is a program of the National Dance Education Organization, created to recognize outstanding artistic merit, leadership, and academic achievement in students studying dance. Induction into the NHSDA is earned through the accumulation of at least 30 points awarded for dance activities such as dance classes, rehearsals, performances, research, workshops, or community service activities, along with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

The NAHA chapter recognizes those students for their outstanding ability in the field of fine or digital arts (who have earned a 90 or above in their discipline at LIHSA). Members foster an excellence and a dedicated spirit in the pursuit of art while encouraging the creative abilities and talents of the individual. NAHS assists students working toward attaining their highest potential as well as increases the overall awareness of art as a viable area within the total school.

The ITS is the honor society for secondary school theatre students. Membership is granted for the performance of meritorious work in theatre arts. The minimum eligibility requirement for Thespian induction is one hundred hours of quality work in theatre arts and related disciplines and good academic standing (3.0 GPA minimum).

Tri-M formerly known as Modern Music Masters, is a program of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). Tri-M student members must be enrolled in at least one music class for at least one semester, have a 2.0 GPA in their core classes, and a 3.0 in their music class(es), and they must be of strong character.
