Congratulations to Graciela Carrillo who was elected to serve as the 2025-2027 American Institute of Architects Director At Large

Graciela Carrillo, Nassau BOCES Facilities Services Department Senior Manager, has been elected to serve as the Director At Large for the 2025-2027 term. Graciela's extensive experience and dedication to collaboration and communication make her an outstanding choice for this role.

Graciela's journey in the field of architecture reflects her commitment to enhancing the profession's role in society. Over the past decade, she has made significant contributions at local, state, and national levels. As a first-generation immigrant and a woman architect, Graciela is particularly passionate about supporting and mentoring young practitioners, women, and immigrants, fostering a more diverse and inclusive architectural community.

Locally, Graciela co-founded the Emerging Professionals Committee in 2015 and the Women in Architecture Committee in 2018 within the AIA Long Island Chapter. Her leadership as the first Latina President of the Chapter in 2020 significantly increased female representation on the Board from 10% in 2018 to 50% today, highlighting her commitment to inclusivity.

At the state level, Graciela represented AIANYS at the Young Architects Forum from 2017 to 2018. During this time, she helped establish the AIANYS Vice President of Emerging Professionals and the AIANYS Young Architect Award, providing essential support and recognition for emerging professionals.

Nationally, Graciela served on the AIA Global Practice Committee, contributing to revising the Global Primer, an important guide for international architectural practice. She is currently developing a guide to help local Chapters establish their own Global Practice Committees. Her role on the AIA Strategic Council as the NYS representative and current Council Moderator has given her a broad understanding of the profession's current and future challenges.

Beyond her involvement with AIA, Graciela co-founded the non-profit organization Immigrant Architects Coalition, which empowers immigrant architects in the United States through publications, podcasts, and panel discussions. Her efforts highlight her dedication to creating opportunities for all aspiring architects, regardless of their background.
