2011 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award Honoree
Anne Crowley
Senior Work Environment Manager
Marriott International
Anne Crowley stands out as a leader when it comes to creating partnerships between education and business. During her more than 30 years with Marriott International, she has been instrumental in developing several work-experience programs for students.
As director of human resources for the Long Island Marriott in 1981, Crowley was approached about crafting a program to introduce Nassau BOCES' students to the skills they need to enter the workforce. Her efforts during the next two decades led to hundreds of students successfully preparing for and finding employment.
She is an advocate of teaching soft skills such as dress for an interview, communicating with a supervisor and managing one's time. Over the years, she has conducted dozens of mock interviews to provide students with practical experiences.
Crowley also arranged for off-site training and internships for students at the hotel in areas such as food services, front desk duties and industrial housekeeping. Many of the students were subsequently offered jobs there, including 25 from Nassau BOCES' Career Support Services program.
Her support for these students often goes beyond the date they are hired. She educates new employees about 401K savings programs, health benefit packages, credit union savings programs and tuition reimbursement opportunities.
Throughout the years, she began expanding her efforts to include students from school districts, such as Westbury, Freeport and Roosevelt UFSDs.
Crowley rose through the ranks with the Long Island Marriott, from front desk clerk to director of human resources. She is now a senior work environment manager for Marriott International's New York market.
She lives in Mineola, N.Y., and loves to spend time with her nieces and nephew. During her free time, she likes to golf and bike ride.
