2008 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award Honoree
Stephen Gassman, Esq.
Managing Director Gassman, Baiamonte, Betts & Tannenbaum, P.C.
Combining his love of children with a desire to give back to the community, Stephen Gassman started the Nassau County Bar Association’s We Care program more than 20 years ago. Since then hundreds of legal professionals have used this charitable program to improve the quality of life for all county residents.
Under Gassman’s leadership, We Care has sponsored many initiatives for children, including scholarships for high school students, camps for underprivileged and disabled children, sports outings for disadvantaged youths, and children’s support programs for victims of domestic violence.
Gassman, former president of the Nassau County Bar Association, is most excited about an initiative to help students learn about the law. Recently, We Care built a moot courtroom at Hempstead Middle School. Throughout the year, dozens of lawyers and judges visit the school to teach students about their rights and to warn them about the consequences of breaking the law. He hopes that some of the students will learn to love the law and decide to become legal professionals.
With more than 30 years of experience in matrimonial and family law, it is fitting that Gassman also is proud of the clinics We Care holds for families dealing with divorce and other legal issues. As a founding member of Gassman, Baiamonte, Betts & Tannenbaum, P.C., he has successfully tried hundreds and settled thousands of matrimonial cases. In addition, he has served as appellate counsel in the Appellate Division and Court of Appeals.
A graduate of the University of North Carolina and New York Law School, Gassman has served as an adjunct professor of law at Touro Law School and as chair of the Family Law Section of the New York State Bar Association. He is one of fewer than 100 trial lawyers to be designated as a diplomate of the exclusive American College of Family Trial Lawyers.
Since winning the National Bar Association’s award for best new program, We Care has served as a model for Bar Associations throughout the country choosing to create their own charitable branches.
