2012 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award Honoree

Katie Haug

Katie Haug

Teacher, Seaford Manor School
Seaford UFSD

A lifelong Seaford resident, Katie Haug was thrilled to have the opportunity to begin her teaching career in her hometown. Not only is she excited to enjoy her educational tenure there, but the opportunity to give back to the community she so cherishes is only fitting.

"Whether in the classroom, on the basketball court where she coaches, or on the streets of the community in which she teaches and lives, Katie is ever present to provide support and encouragement whether to a student, a parent or a colleague," wrote her Education Partner Award nominator.

She began teaching sixth grade in 1996 at the Seaford Middle School. After one year, she moved to Seaford Manor Elementary School where she spent the next 15 years teaching first and second grades.

Katie is always the first to pilot a new program or search through educational literature to find a new strategy for routine curriculum. She integrates technology with the ease in which she does everything and she makes sure that education is always individualized for all learners.

A strong believer in paying it forward, she often relishes the chance to help student teachers as they begin their careers. For more than 10 years, she has been a key component in the Integrated Co-Teaching Model and a part of the Shared Decision Making team. She is a PTA teacher representative, has been a part of curriculum writing committees, and a middle school cheerleading and girls basketball coach.

As a pillar in her community, she can often be seen encouraging her students, past and present, at Seaford school events or coaching her daughter on the little league field.

She holds a bachelor's degree in education from Molloy College and a master's degree in technology from NYIT. Katie continues to apply this background to bring technology to her students every day as she constantly stays abreast of the newest ways to make learning exciting.

Katie and her husband Kevin are the proud parents of their daughter Meghan who attends Seaford Manor Elementary School, and Aidan who will soon attend that school as well.
