2012 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award Honoree

Brian O'Flaherty

Brian O'Flaherty

Board Trustee
East Meadow UFSD

Brian O'Flaherty is the consummate volunteer, especially for children. He fights tirelessly on their behalf as a member of the East Meadow UFSD Board of Education.

"Brian is an outstanding, competent and driven individual who cares deeply for the community in which he was raised and in the school district where he was educated," wrote his nominator for the Education Partner Award. "He is the one who you hear saying that if it is for the children, then let's get it done."

Brian began his work with the district in 1994 as a member of the Financial Advisory Committee. After nearly a decade in this role, he decided to run for the board. Elected in 2003, he has served as both vice president and president.

Brian is especially dedicated to special education students and encourages the district to provide a variety of activities for these children. He is instrumental in the district's participation in the Braille Challenge, a national competition for blind children. He also introduced the district to the Free Players, a theatrical group comprised of adults with special needs.

Brian also volunteers in other ways. As treasurer for the East Meadow Kiwanis Club, he has encouraged a relationship with the school district so that students can participate in a variety of service projects. This has led to thousands of meals being prepared and baskets of food being given to needy families in East Meadow and throughout Nassau County. For all of his efforts, Brian has received many awards, including a donation made in his name to the International Kiwanis Foundation as a Community Service Leader.

He is the vice president and general manager of 500 Park Avenue, a 203,000 square foot property located in Manhattan. During his tenure, the building has won two Building Owners and Management Association awards and the 2004-05 NYC Renovated Building of the Year and the 2005-06 NYC Operating Building of the Year awards.

Brian has a bachelor's degree in accounting from Hofstra University.
