2017 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award Honoree

Mark Schlobohm

Mark Schlobohm

Parts and Service Director, Honda City

For more than 15 years, Mark Schlobohm has been a staunch supporter of the automotive program at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech. As one of the school’s most valued industry partners, Mr. Schlobohm meets with faculty and administrators to offer input on curriculum and regularly visits classrooms to talk with students and share his experiences in the automotive field. As indispensable as his expertise is, however, he provides Barry Tech students with the most vital tool of all — experience.

Every year, Mr. Schlobohm invites Barry Tech students to intern at Honda City and hires them for summer employment. In this capacity, students get invaluable, real-world work experience, training under certified A-Tech automotive specialists and learning the skills they need to be successful in their chosen fields. Mr. Schlobohm frequently hires Barry Tech graduates for entry-level positions and even helps prepare them to continue their education, both within Honda City and at college.

Mr. Schlobohm says the relationship is mutually beneficial to Honda City, as they are able to groom future employees that they know have received the highest quality training from a distinguished career and technical education school. He recalls having told one Barry Tech graduate upon hiring that he was hiring his replacement. After 12 years of watching this young man grow and flourish, Mr. Schlobohm now feels his words were prophetic.

“Mark Schlobohm is a strong advocate of Barry Tech programs and believes that the next generation of students are the future of the automotive industry,” wrote his award nominator. “He regularly finds time in his busy schedule to volunteer in our classrooms and consistently takes our students under his wing. No student in any classroom gets real-world experiences like the ones offered at Honda City. Barry Tech is extremely fortunate to have partnered with Mr. Schlobohm, and we are very grateful for his support.”
