2020 George Farber Outstanding Student Award Honoree
Adult Learning Center
Garden City Park
Colleen showed extraordinary drive and commitment to her education from her first day of attendance at the Adult Learning Center. She showed up every day, always did her homework and made her way through math, which was very difficult for her. She would complete additional assignments and share resources that she found helpful with her teachers and classmates. Colleen’s goal was to receive her high school equivalency diploma and work towards and fulfill her dream of becoming a Peer Counselor for individuals fighting addiction. Colleen’s honesty has supported her success in her chosen field. She was offered two positions from two different agencies, both willing to wait for her to complete her educational requirements. This shows she is recognized as a compassionate and hard-working person. Colleen’s commitment to her community is evident through the work she chooses, both paid and voluntary, and her commitment to mentorship both in and out of the classroom. Colleen is now working in the field she loves. She stays in touch with her teachers and has offered to come back to speak to students in the program. Her commitment to her community, her school and herself is a model for all.
