2022 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award Honoree
Anthony Fierro
Executive Director, Department of Facilities Services
Nassau BOCES
Mr. Fierro is an experienced architect and educational leader whose work over the past forty years in facilities management has had an immeasurable impact on Long Island schools. He has helped to create some of the safest, most adaptive, and innovative learning environments, while managing and maintaining more than a million square feet of educational space at numerous locations throughout Nassau County.
Mr. Fierro has spearheaded hundreds of school construction projects over the years. Among the most notable are the design of the campus for the Long Island High School for the Arts and the Joseph M. Barry Career and Technical Education Center. He has overseen all facets of facilities operations, including capital construction, security and emergency response, custodial services, central maintenance, grounds maintenance and warehousing.
Over the course of the past two years, Mr. Fierro has been instrumental in developing Nassau BOCES’ COVID response and preparing the pandemic and post-pandemic building protocols for the agency’s schools. He coordinated with all program departments in updating pandemic plans in compliance with CDC, NYS and Nassau County DOH guidelines.
In the months before COVID, Mr. Fierro collaborated with the Long Island Chapter of the American Institute of Architects to establish an educational conference with the purpose of bringing the educational community and design professionals together to explore the future of school design. With the onset of COVID, he transformed the conference into a webinar series aimed at designing learning environments to meet the needs of post-pandemic education. The series, launched in 2020, was so popular that it grew into a global virtual conference featuring national and international architectural design firms, brainstorming on innovative school design projects and concepts.
In addition to being a Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation Board member, Mr. Fierro recently earned the Honor Award for Community Service from the Long Island Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. He is also the recipient of the SCOPE Education Services Award in recognition of his administrative service to Nassau BOCES and Long Island schools.
