American Ballet Theatre (ABT) is one of the greatest dance companies in the world. Revered as a national treasure since its founding season in 1940, its mission is to create, present, preserve, and extend the great repertoire of classical dancing for the widest possible audience. Headquartered in New York City, ABT is the only cultural institution of its size and stature to extensively tour, enchanting audiences for eight decades in 50 US states, 45 countries, and over 480 cities worldwide.

ABT’s repertoire, perhaps unmatched in the history of ballet includes the seminal ballets of the 19th century, the finest works of the 20th century, and acclaimed contemporary masterpieces. ABT has commissioned works by the great choreographic geniuses of the 20th century, including George Balanchine, Antony Tudor, Jerome Robbins, Agnes de Mille, and Twyla Tharp.

In 2006, an act of Congress officially designated ABT as “America’s National Ballet Company” in recognition of its mission to bring the finest in dance to the widest possible audience.

For the past decade, ABT has offered invaluable support to Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA). Their renowned dance instructors have prepared LIHSA students for colleges and conservatories, as well as professional auditions and, eventually, careers in dance. They provide unparalleled education, teaching the skills they acquired during their impressive careers and artistic experiences. ABT instructors share the protocols and procedures of the world’s most prestigious companies, inform students about current industry standards, and help students to earn work-based learning hours through yearlong residencies.

“When our students take master classes with these remarkable educators, they are getting direct feedback on their skills and technique from the best in the field,” said ABT’s nominator. “They bring exceptional cultural opportunities to our students, helping them to experience what it means to be in one of the world’s most elite dance corps.”
