Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center at Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center (formerly Schneider Children’s Hospital and North Shore-LIJ Children’s Hospital) is the top-ranked children’s hospital in New York State, and one of the best children’s hospitals across the country and around the globe. The medical center has been lauded by U.S. News & World Report, and is the winner of multiple prestigious awards. As director of pediatric emergency psychiatry and behavioral health urgent care, Dr. Vera Feuer is a vital and essential part of the hospital’s reputation for success.

A staunch advocate of children’s health, Dr. Feuer sees the critical need for healthcare to partner with education in order for students to truly thrive. She has conducted numerous engagements with local boards of education and school district administrators, taking a hands-on approach to ensure that each student’s unique needs are being met. Through her tireless efforts, Cohen’s behavioral health clinics currently serve nearly half of the school districts in Nassau County, providing crucial urgent care to students and families in crisis.

When Long Island school districts suffer tragedies, Dr. Feuer was on the front lines, taking immediate action to integrate Cohen’s resources into the district’s response plan. She established a support line for parents, offering mental health and crisis intervention services alongside assistance with crucial practical matters, such as navigating insurance issues. This proactive approach set a precedent for effective crisis-response strategies that prioritize the well-being of students and their families.
