Stephanie Ralton

School Counselor, H.B. Mattlin Middle School
Plainview-Old Behpage CSD

As a counselor for Howard B. Mattlin Middle School in the Plainview-Old Bethpage school district, Stephanie Ralton has a 17-year track record of improving students’ lives on multiple levels. The secret to her success is in the following of two basic principles; nurturing empathy in her students, and a devotion to lifelong learning. She models the first of these principles by organizing and leading social action programs, then involving both her students and the community in carrying them out.

Ms. Ralton is the advisor to the MMS Student Government, where she leads students in conducting a number of fundraisers and social awareness projects. Among their most successful events is Relay for Life, which unites school and community in helping to improve the lives of those battling cancer through advocacy, research and patient support, as well as to prevent, detect and treat cancer. Each year, the school raises thousands of dollars for the American Cancer Society, while taking the time to celebrate cancer survivors and remember those who fought valiantly, but ultimately lost the battle.

As a lifelong learner, Ms. Ralton is enthusiastic about trying new strategies and discovering new avenues to enhance her skills. She is excited about research and eagerly attends educational conferences to find proven strategies and effective ideas, then bring them back and implement them at MMS. And her enthusiastic learning does not benefit MMS students alone. Ms. Ralton shares what she has learned with the other middle school counselors in our district, so that they can incorporate the knowledge into their practice as well.
