Lt. Robert L. Connolly

Commanding Officer of Homeland Security
Nassau County Police Department

Under the direction of Commanding Officer Lt. Robert Connolly, the Nassau County Police Department’s Homeland Security Unit has made our school districts and our children a top priority and is devoted to keeping them safe. The units specialized team of officers is specifically assigned to assist school districts in response to issues outside their daily routine, address security concerns, develop emergency responses, and provide training of students and staff on these issues.

Lt. Robert Connolly works closely with school districts, administrators and educational agencies to keep schools abreast of potential issues, routinely conducts school security assessments, and provides in-district safety training. He also attends monthly meetings of the Nassau County Council of School Superintendents (NCCSS) safety subcommittee, to review school district concerns and update superintendents on emerging issues.

NCPD Homeland Security has established an emergency notification system designed specifically to alert and update superintendents on county-wide emergency issues. Collaborating with BOCES, they regularly provide training for students, educators and the public on recognizing and reporting suspicious activity. Lt. Connolly personally responds to school safety issues on an around-the-clock basis, and as a result, the units response time is one of the best in the nation.

The Lieutenant created cross-sectional Threat Assessment Teams for Nassau County schools, consisting of law enforcement and educators and Mental Health professionals. The newly-developed Nassau County Threat Advisory Committee (NASTAC) works with existing Threat Assessment Teams to provide training and advise on best practices and management strategies. This team empowers schools to better prepare for potential threats and to address those threats immediately and from numerous perspectives.
